Frugality as a vice?

Another post ala Rod Dreher.  In the modern economy, it appears that being frugal and responsible are social ills that will lead us all to poverty and destruction.  Ok, so that’s overstating the article’s contention, but I have seen more and more articles stating that we need to spend ourselves out of this thing.  No doubt, that is what the economy needs to return it to where it was a few years ago, but is it really best for individual families?  In the long run frugality and responsibility would go a long ways towards preparing the average family for hard times.  Many of the people who are currently in such dire straights are no doubt wishing that they had been more frugal over the last decade or so.
