Localism by Local Currency

Rod Dreher has a post about local currencies.  He links to this article from USA Today.  Just the other day I had read this article having to do with the city of Ithaca, NY, (yes, I realize that they are liberal) that talks extensively about the Ithaca Hours.

Interesting idea about how to keep money within the community.  This is one of the big shortcomings that I see of large chain retail stores.  Far more money spent at a chain store leaves the community than when that money is spent at a local business.  Can local currencies be a possitive solution to this problem?
