The Problem of Communitarianism

There is an interesting post on the League of Ordinary Gentlemen blog regarding Rod Dreher’s recent post on Philip Blond and Red Toryism.  I’ve been pretty interested in some of the ideas that Blond has written, as they represent some possible practical application of “crunchy” conservatism.

I do think that the questions asked in this article are certainly valid.  As time goes on I’m starting to think that maybe the problem is that communitarianism’s place is largely in the community.  I have recently been leaning towards the idea that we need national policies that push more power towards the state and local governments.  From that point I am in favor of those local entities making more community minded decisions.  I think that the concerns about tyranny are less likely to come to fruition on a local level because the local leaders will be more accountable to the people they are representing.  Dierkes’ mention of transitional communities is certainly a good example of community minded people operating at a local level.  I’m still formulating my thoughts on this, but I hope to write a more comprehensive post soon that will expand on my current thoughts.
